Groovy summer jams
My latest and greatest mix, put it on, turn it up, jam.
Girl Unit – Wut EP
Another scorching hot release from the always-on-point Night Slugs imprint. Girl Unit, whose I.R.L. EP made a loud splash earlier this year, raises the bar with another finely-tuned collection of fresh bass music. I.R.L.‘s frantic dance energy has been replaced by half tempo, head-nodding tracks that sound more akin to spaced-out Southern rap than the amorphous future house sounds that Night Slugs is known for. The title track stands out with its twinkling bells and ethereal synths, but both “Showstoppa” and “Every Time” would have also been worthy of A-side status. Pick this one up right away.

Pariah’s Safehouses EP
Finally got around to listening to Pariah‘s new Safehouses EP, the highly anticipated follow-up to his hot single “Detroit Falls” earlier this year. These six tracks find the London-based producer drawing from a diverse range of styles. Between the frenetic garage rhythms of opener “The Slump” to the lush, Mount Kimbie-esque sounds of “Railroad” to the dense, undulating atmospheres of the percussion-less closing/title track, you can tell that Pariah (real name Arthur Cayzer) wanted to venture beyond the Dilla-inspired electro-swagger of “Detroit Falls.” Fortunately, he returns to this sound on standout track “C-Beams,” on which he deftly layers piano stabs and glistening, whirlwind synth melodies over airy atmospherics and manipulated vocal samples. I’m still not quite sure how he ties it all together so well, but I’m not complaining. The other track I keep coming back to is “Crossed Out,” a Joy Orbison-inspired model of UK funky/post-dubstep perfection that has some of the best percussion work of any release this year. I’m truly excited to see where this dude’s gonna go next. You can buy his Safehouses EP, out now on R&S Records, over at Boomkat.

Discloser
Not sure why it happened but I forgot about posting really cool music for a while, I found some funky UK 2-step a while back that should not be looked over. Disclosure, another duo of brothers from the UK released Offline Dexterity Sept. 6th on Moshi Moshi records (The same label that hosts Hot City, Hot Chip, and The Very Best just to name a few). Oh, and these kids are 15 and 18 years old, crazy talent! Offline Dexterity brings and unbelievably catchy bass-line coupled with hot sleazy vocals. Lingister is silky smooth with yet another hot vocal track and synths that will knock your socks off with its little dubby flares.

Feeling Right
Trying to hold on to that last bit of summer fun PUNCHES released Feeling Right and has been keeping me warm with its bright disco sounds. I have found that any song with feel good vibes, piano driven melodies, and hand claps creates musical nirvana. PUNCHES is twin brother DJ’s out of New York, Feeling Right features vocals from Alan Astor (one of those twin brother DJ’s). For those of you looking for something a little more hype The Phantoms Revenge remix is hot as tamales right from the steamer. The track hits you with horn lines that knock you back to the 70′s then hits you a heavy dose of breaks and disco synth that has not been matched since Duck Sauce.

Crooks and Lovers
I know that UK duo Mount Kimbie‘s Crooks and Lovers isn’t exactly brand-spanking-new, but I still have it playing on heavy rotation. I really love the aimlessly wandering guitar and vocal samples on “Before I Move Off” and the rich atmosphere of “Would Know,” which alternates between a downtempo sound reminiscent of Shlohmo and the trademark, soulful post-dubstep sound that Mount Kimbie is known for.

New Video from Dibiase
Dibiase’s new album Machines Hate Me was released last week on Alpha Pup Records, and it’s full of the glitchy, off-kilter low end productions that have become synonymous with the L.A. label. It’s another killer release for Alpha Pup that you should check out right away if you’re even remotely interested in the whole beats scene. For a taste of what to expect, check out the trippy video for “Skullcrack,” a devastatingly heavy track that finds space-age blips hovering over a confrontational bass line and sparse, pounding drums.

Tonight I wanna see you in the dark
At first I was hesitant to write about Chromeo’s newest single “Don’t Turn The Lights On” because it’s already been blogged into the ground, but it’s just too good of a track to not post. It’s the same 80s-obsessed, fun-loving Chromeo we all know and love so much, only smoother, sexier, and more refined. Their new album Business Casual, which comes out in mid September, is definitely shaping up to be one of the standout albums of the year. I doubt we’ll hear any more official releases from the album before its release, but luckily we have a couple stellar remixes from Aeroplane and Christian Martin along with an equally creepy/brilliant music video to hold us over until then.

Not My Mix, Not My Problem
Wow, it’s definitely been a hot minute. I’ve been squeezing all the fun I can out of what’s left of summer and it’s pretty much killed my productivity across the board. Anyways, here’s a mix that I recorded about a month ago but never got around to posting. I wanted to do a sort of survey of some of the modern bass sounds that I’m really geeked about, so I started with some throwback house tracks and progressed through various eclectic styles before finally settling into a groove with some soulful future house. I’m really happy with how this mix turned out, so I hope you enjoy it! And if you want the tracklist you can grab it from Mixcloud.
